Statewide Program Offices
The Office of the Women's Studies Librarian was
created in 1977 to serve administrators, faculty,
librarians and students across the UW System. Since 1989 it
has been a constituent of the Women's Studies Consortium. Located on the UW-Madison
campus, the office provides bibliographic and curriculum support, inter-institutional
cooperation, information sharing, and advocacy related to the field of Women's Studies and to gender-focused
scholarship in the traditional disciplines.
The Office carries out its mission through:
Initiated by a grant from the Division of Undergraduate Education of
the National Science Foundation, the Women and Science Program
became a permanent part of the UW System in the fall of 1996. The program is based on the UW-Oshkosh
campus and serves all UW System institutions.
The ultimate goal of the program is to attract and retain qualified
female and minority students in science, mathematics and engineering by improving the quality
of undergraduate science education for both women and men through faculty development
activities. The program is designed to reform introductory curricula and increase female
and minority representation in science by:
- Increasing faculty expertise in gender and science scholarship and
pedagogy
- Providing role models of professional women scientists
- Improving classroom and campus climate
- Creating statewide and campus "science communities" that will promote
effective learning.
